July 2023 Newsletter

This is just a quick update on progress to date.

As you know, we finally completed the purchase of the Old Horn Inn on 16th June. This was achieved by using some of our own funds and a matching amount from the Community Ownership Fund.

Since then we have had a team of volunteers from our community who have come in a stripped all furniture and fittings out of the pub. These are stored in various locations throughout the villages!

Our team has also stripped all wallpaper, removed all floor coverings, cleared all lofts, drained the heating system and stripped out all plumbing and bathroom fixtures.

This has been a mammoth task and our thanks go to everyone involved.

You will soon be able to view these efforts on our website at www.oldhorncommunity.org.

We believe now that we have gone as far as we can and it is now time to hand over to the professionals.

Our agreement with the Community Ownership Fund requires us to seek quotations as follows:

Work up to £2500 :- we can appoint a supplier

Work between £2500 and £25000 -we need three quotations

Work above £25,000 must be put out to a formal competitive tendering procedure.

All the above figures include VAT

We are in the process of getting quotations from builders, plumbers and electricians and hope to be able to announce appointments soon with work starting in earnest in early August.

We have also received quotations from window suppliers and again hope to announce an appointment shortly.

Our Benefit Society is now VAT registered and so we can reclaim VAT on our refurbishment work.

With regard to the internal decoration of the pub then all we can say at this stage is that nothing has been decided. We will need to put new flooring throughout the pub but whether that is stone, tile, wood or carpet has still to be firmed up. Our options may be limited due to the low beam in the bar area. Many people will remember smacking their head on that thing! Flooring needs to be relatively thin otherwise even more people will smack their head!

We do want to put a double sided log burner in the fireplace to serve both rooms. I know this will come as a huge disappointment to those who enjoyed the roaring fires provided by the previous landlord!

We have a limited budget and must be extremely careful how we manage this. We will always try to get the best value for the community.

If you have any particular interior design preferences then please feel free to email us but do remember our limited budget so please don't be disappointed if we are unable to accommodate ( for example) carrara marble flooring laid by Tuscan artisans.

Unfortunately The Old Horn has been treated very unkindly for many, many, years and there is much to do to bring our pub back to life.

We will keep you informed each month and thank you for your support.
